Guarneri ‘del Gesù’ Exhibition – From 23rd  September on

Surrounded by beautiful and mysterious things, the exhibition at Amorim Fine Violins Cremona brings to life the stories behind the great instruments by ‘del Gesù’. An exhibition that spans over 300 years of history, at a time that the appreciation for master craftsmanship has never been greater. Visitors can admire the copies by Luiz Amorim on display along with the history of this fantastic maker.

Guarneri del Gesu, the world-renowned violin maker, has a special place in history. Here at our workshop, the appreciation of his work is even greater. Luiz’s inspiration in Guarneri started due to the expressiveness of his instruments. Throughout the career of “del Gesù,” his work became increasingly expressive, especially at the end, when he managed to demonstrate, as in a work of art, his identity. Guarneri did not produce an instrument like the other, and this clearly shows his inventive and free character, placing his identity in each one of them. He had expressive features that could be easily distinguished, unlike most of his colleagues at the time.

“It is essential to have this freedom of expression and not to be tied to the aesthetic form. He was an artist, and I identify myself a lot for that.” Luiz Amorim

Throughout his career, Luiz had the pleasure of playing in a beautiful Guarneri, a sound that stayed in his mind, which became another inspiration and an objective in his work. Guarneri had a unique technique, focused on developing a powerful sound and a rich and deep timbre. His violins have an outstanding structure, with a very expressive volute and a flatter arching – highlighting the elegant Fs, which seems inspired by the Brescia school. He produced numerous versatile and innovative violins, mainly during the peak of his career – 10 years before his death.

In the end, for Luiz, making a copy is not just replicating the author’s work, but showing its heritage, the story behind it. Besides, not only the story of the maker but also of the musician who played this instrument and whose name has been carried over the years. It shows the importance of exalting the two artists, the one who provides the instrument for the other to uniquely express themselves in their entirety.

We will cover all aspects of the history behind this fantastic maker and leave you with an understanding of the history of his violins. Besides admiring the violins, visitors will learn more about Guarneri ‘del Gesù’s’ life and enjoy live violin making. To finalize the exhibition, there is a section dedicated to the forgotten female violin maker of Cremona, ‘del Gesú’s’ wife, Katerina Rota.
